Summoners War is a dueling faction Role Play Game. The game includes warrior tribes of six races, and each race has its own unique skills. During a turn of the game, the player can have various steps to perform. The first is calling. It costs the player magic points equal to the cost of the reinforcement card to place it on the board. The second is move, where the player can move up to 3 different units, each containing 1 or 2 spaces. Third, players can build gates or structures. Fourth, players can roll the dice to attack the enemy and cause damage. Players can also destroy them and gain magic points. Fifth, players can discard cards for additional magic points. Sixth, replenish up to five cards to the player's hand by drawing cards. These gameplays go back and forth between players until one player defeats the other player's summoner.

The key to player success in Summoner Wars is finding a balance between asymmetric factions and combining them with each other through luck and near-perfect strategy. Each game in Summoner Wars has a different playstyle. This keeps the game attractive enough to players. For example, resource management and movement of goblins with lots of cheap reinforcements is key to player success, as goblins' low health means they can't last long in battle. Players are considered advanced players if they master the six basic factions included in the game and can mix and match cards into their custom decks.
